Opti Kinderpram:  Designed for children, ages 5 & 6. This class will meet 5 Friday mornings a summer with their mom, dad, or babysitter. The children will learn the parts of the optimist sailboat, sail in the boat with their guardian and gain comfort with the boat and the water.  The Kinderpram class will visit popular spots around the lake and partake in various activities/games around North Lake, all after having navigated to their destination in their very own optimist sailboat.

Learn to Sail:  These sailors will have completed 1st Grade and are completely new to sailing or have graduated from the Opti Kinderpram Class. Students will go on various excursions around the lake as they increase their comfort level and mobility sailing their own optimist sailboat. This class will teach sailing terminology as well as the very basics of sailing including skills like rigging and de-rigging of the boat and reading wind direction.
NOTE:  If your child is 10 or older, he/she may be placed in the Green Fleet Sailing Class. Please contact Laura Johnson at

Green Fleet Sailing:  Green Fleet sailors have experience sailing, but may or may not have racing experience.  This sailor may or may not be sailing at off lake regattas, but will work on developing basic racing skills. Sailors will learn about race courses and racing rules as they navigate up and down the course. In addition to skills learned in the Learn to Sail Class, the focus of the Green Fleet is on boat handling skills.

Red, White & Blue (RWB) Fleet Sailing:  Designed specifically for the serious Opti racer and requires instructor approval, based on a skills checklist and maturity level. This class will focus on dry land instruction, racing and racing tactics, and drills to increase boat handling skills, such as roll tacking, buoy rounding and downwind maneuvers.  Students in this class are encouraged to travel to various regattas throughout the season.

X Boats:    X boats require a skipper and a crew. This class is for the 11 - 16 year old sailors who are interested in learning to sail a two person boat. Prior sailing experience is not necessary, as sailors will learn the basics of boat handling.  Once a comfort level is achieved, sailors will be introduced to racing.  Boats are available to rent on a first come first serve basis.  If you are interested, but don’t have a partner to sail with, please contact us at northlakesailing@gmail.com
